Thousands of Kenyans staged a protest on Wednesday against the country's coalition government, which has been polarised over graft allegations and the implementation of key reforms pledged two years ago.

Protesters threatened to march from the Rift Valley to Nairobi but their procession was aborted after armed police blocked the highway. The people had been displaced by the violence that broke out after the December 2007 elections.

There were also demonstrations outside President Mwai Kibaki's office in Nairobi.

Tensions in government increased last weekend when Prime Minister Raila Odinga suspended two ministers accused of graft and Kibaki vetoed the move. The Prime Minister's Orange Democratic Movement is boycotting cabinet meetings as a result.
