Police disperse more protestors

Police in western Ivory Coast broke up anti-government protestors on Saturday, a day after clashes killed at least five people in the town of Gagnoa. Officials confirmed that Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore will meet opposition leaders on Sunday for talks, and a new government will be announced on Monday.

A member of the opposition told the AFP news agency that police used tear gas to disperse protests in Gagnoa, as General Philippe Mangou confirmed that security had been reinforced.

Mangou said at least five people were killed, and nine wounded in clashes on Friday between demonstrators and security services.

Meanwhile, days after President Laurent Gbagbo dissolved the government and disbanded the Independent Electoral Commission, a source close to Prime Minister Guillaume Soro said that he “will present his government Monday”, after a meeting between opposition leaders.

Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore will meet with former Ivorian President Henri Konan Bedie, and ex-Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara.

It is thought a successful meeting will result in the opposition joining the government otherwise a new government would be presented regardless.

Elections have been postponed several times since 2005 and are due to be held in March this year.
