New government expected after successful mediation

Côte d'Ivoire's Prime Minister Guillaume Soro is set to name a new cabinet on Tuesday after mediation by Burkina Faso's President Blaise Compaoré in the country’s political crisis. At least seven people have died in protests over President Laurent Gbagbo's sacking of the government on 12 February.
Gbagbo said he fired his ministers because of fraud on the electoral roll. But opponents accused him of trying to delay presidential elections that were due to take place in March.
The elections have been postponed six times since 2005 and at least seven people were killed in violent protests since the government was dissolved 11 days ago. Two people were killed on demonstrations on Monday.
"The results are satisfactory," Compaoré said after mediation talks on Monday. He said the main parties "have undertaken to reconstruct the Côte d'Ivoire government to reconstitute the Independent Electoral Commission this week".
He said this would ensure the quality of the electoral list and would pave the way for a date to be set for planned presidential elections this year.
"Discussions are over and have allowed Ivorian political actors to agree to advance the process of ending the crisis and above all to bring peace back to our country," Soro said.
The elections are designed to unify a nation split between the south – dominated by Gbagbo’s party – and the north, which is held by Soro’s ex-rebel New Forces party.
