Côte d'Ivoire's Prime Minister Guillaume Soro named his government on Tuesday night, but 11 of the 27 ministers' seats remain unfilled. With the first cabinet meeting set for Thursday, opposition representatives have yet to be ratified.

Soro has named 16 ministers, most of whom held the same posts in the previous government which was sacked by President Laurent Gbagbo.

Gbagbo has yet to give the green light to proposals submitted by the opposition parties, who described his dismissal of the previous government, along with the electoral commission, as a "coup d'état".

The tough bargaining that preceded Tuesday's announcement is expected to continue, with the opposition wanting to know the make-up of the new electoral commission before it joins the government.

The cabinet is smaller than before, meaning that some politicians find themselves demoted, and all parties who are supposed to be represented can expect to have one fewer minister.

Soro and his new government will try to restore calm to the country, although the opposition has not withdrawn its call for protests against Gbagbo's action, despite several deaths during demonstrations.
