Minurcat mission extended by two months

UN peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy arrived in Chad for talks on Monday. After a meeting with Chad’s President Idriss Deby, Le Roy told RFI that they have agreed to extend Minurcat (the UN mission in the Central African Republic and Chad) by another two months.
President Deby agreed to the “prolongation of the mission for two more months until 15 May 2010, in order to give sufficient time to find an agreement of the future role of Minurcat,” said Le Roy.
“Minurcat will keep completely the same mandate as it has today […] we will have in mind, the question of the refugees, and the civilians, that Minurcat has a mandate to protect,” he added.
Deby demanded the withdrawal of a UN military force on Thursday last week, according to a UN source.
He has called the force a “failure” in protecting around half a million civilians and refugees.
Minurcat was set up in 2007 as part of a UN Security Council resolution. It had been due to pull out on 15 March.
