Rwanda opposition leader Victoire Ingabire was arrested on Wednesday and charged with denying that the 1994 Rwanda genocide took place. Ingabire is also accused of collaborating with the Rwanda Hutu rebels in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

"She is accused of collaborating with a terrorist organisation, dividing the population, denying and downplaying the genocide," a judicial official who refused to be named told French newswire AFP.

Hutus perpetrated a large number of the deaths during the genocide.

Rwandan police spokesman Eric Kayiranga called the charges "serious", and said the prosecution had sufficient evidence to begin. Ingabire is to be handed over to the prosecutor later Wednesday.

Ingabire is the head of the United Democratic Forces (UDC), a party that was formed in exile but that has not been registered. She was to challenge President Paul Kagame at the polls this August.

After returning to Rwanda earlier this year, Ingabire called for a trial for those who were responsible for killing Hutus during the 1994 genocide. Officials believe that this statement effectively shows that she is a genocide denier and have repeatedly questioned her since.

Ingabire has accused the police of harassment and preventing her from running in the presidential race, as they have not registered her political party.

there is no doubt that kagame

there is no doubt that kagame is the only mastermind of genocice in rwanda and also for killing 6 millions of congolese
the only reason he is believed to be powerful is because british and americans back him only for their interests, they don't care about him nor the rwandese,a million of rwandese may die so what...6 millions of congoleses...worse even this american lawyer in rwandese jail still noboby cares he is not worth the congolese natural resources
the funny thing is sarkozy begging his share to kagame

Mind your bussiness

I am a Rwandan and i like freedom, but there are those times in life when we have to sacrifice something in order to get it in ubundance later. I know politically Rwanda is not straight forward but, its trying and development is going on at a good pace. So why not put aside our differences and first develope and after achieving a reasonable growth, then we can pick up the fights. I mean look at Uganda, when Museveni came into power, he was not challenged by anyone for almost 10 years and now Uganda is better than it was 15 or so years before him. I mean don't pull the racial issues in any battle just go and fick for poverty, hunger and I mean there is a lot to correct and make propagandas about without neccesarily going the genocide way.

Mandela of Rwanda arrested

it is outregeous what is happening here in Rwanda. Why should a peaceful campaigner to make Rwanda a better country be put in jail. I fail to understand what is going through the mind of our mighty leader Hitler Paul Kagame. I think we are again on the verge of another genocide. Please the world, don't fold your arms the way it happened in 94. Many tutsi died and lots of hutu have been systematicaly assassinated and when Ingabire dared to speak for the masses the government puts her to the gallows. It' s shame on our part.
