Trade unions South African Transport and Allied Workers Union accepted Passenger Rail Agency's offer of a ten per cent wage increase for the highest paid workers, 12 per cent for medium-wage earners and 12.5 per cent for the lowest paid. All workers will also be given 1,000 rand (105 euros).

Nearly 12,000 workers went on strike on 17 May, stranding some 2 million commuters.

The rail agency has spent 225 million dollars improving its train and bus services in time for the World Cup, which starts on 11 June.
