The owner of the MV QSM Dubai reported the hijacking in the early hours of Wednesday, saying that the pirates had boarded the ship and taken control.

Navfor said a US warship had been patrolling the waters and saw someone get on to the ship with a rocket-propelled grenade. After flying over the ship, they concluded it had been hijacked.

The 15,220-tonne ship was coming from Brazil.
