According to several witnesses, at least 10 FNL activists were hurt, some by bullets, during the police intervention outside the residence of the FNL President Agathon Rwasa's home in the Kiriri district on Bujumbura's heights.

The activists had gathered because they feared the possible arrest of their leader.

The police acknowledge that they have arrested 32 people, but say that they wanted only to dislodge the FNL activists and that only one person was injured.

Tensions in Burundi have been mounting since opposition parties rejected the results of the May 24 local elections, saying the ruling National Council for the Defence of Democracy - Front for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) had engineered its landslide win by fraud.
