Mandela attends great-granddaughter’s funeral
Nelson Mandela attended the funeral of his 13-year-old great-granddaughter, who was killed in a car accident after the World Cup’s opening concert, on Thursday morning.
Zenani Mandela’s funeral was held in the brick chapel of the Johannesburg private school the 13-year-old had attended until her death in a car crash last week.
The anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela sat in the front pew of St Stithian Chapel, accompanied by his wife Graca. His former wife Winnie, Zenani’s great-grandmother, also attended the ceremony.
Mourners, including Zenani's classmates in school blazers, each held a single white rose. They stood to sing Amazing Grace as the funeral began.
Zenani was killed overnight on 10 June, on her way back from the World Cup opening concert in the Soweto township. The car’s 23-year-old driver was arrested and charged with drink-driving.
91-year-old Mandela cancelled an appearance at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Soccer City, following Zenani’s death.
