Electricity strike put off till Monday

A strike by electricity workers at South Africa’s power utility has been put off until Monday. The action by the trade union Solidarity will disrupt the football World Cup currently being staged in the country.
The union willl mull over a management offer well short of the 15 per cent increase demanded by the workers over the weekend.
Solidarity’s deputy secretary-general Dirk Hermann says mineworkers and metalworkers also employed at the power utility known as Escom are in accord with him.
He’s not saying the strike is over it’s just been postponed until Monday when the union
will respond to management’s offer of eight per cent plus a one-off bonus of one per cent.
Solidarity is also demanding that Escom match a 500-euro monthly housing allowance being paid to mangement.
Workers are leveraging their collective power during the football World Cup to get maximum benefit.
Security stewards at five of the ten world cup stadiums have gone out on strike. At least three times riot police have used tear gas and stun grenades to quell disruptive gatherings .
