Rwanda's ex-army chief recovering after being shot
Rwanda's former army chief Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa is recovering in hospital after being shot outside his home in South Africa.

Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa, who was cut down by an assassin’s bullet outside his Johannesburg home yesterday, is recovering in hospital.
His wife, Rosette Nyamwasa, has blamed Rwandan authorities for the attack, which was frustrated by a jammed weapon. Kigali authorities have denied any involvement.
Doctors at the intensive care unit of the private Morningside Clinic in Johannesburg say Nyamwasa’s condition is improving.

"His condition is improving, he has undergone X-rays and the doctors say there is no need to operate," said Rosette Nyamwasa.
Police say the assailant shot the general in the stomach, as he drove up to his home. The assailant’s gun jammed and he was prevented from firing a second shot. He escaped after a scuffle with the wounded Nyamwasa, who got out of the car.
Police have opened an attempted murder docket and say they won’t speculate on the motive for the attack.
Nyamwasa’s wife says nothing was stolen, pointing to the fact that the attacker meant to kill rather than rob her husband.
Nyamwasa took refuge in South Africa after fleeing his position as Rwanda’s ambassador to India in February.
He was accused of planning a series of grenade attacks in the run up to elections in Rwanda scheduled for august.
