Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has revered his earlier decision to ban the country's team from competitive football because of its poor World Cup performance. But there may be an anti-corruption probe into the national football federation.
A statement from presidential adviser Ima Niboro said the decision was taken after a meeting between the president and sports officials.
Just an hour before the world football governing body, Fifa was set to pronounce a
regime of sanctions on Nigerian, President Goodluck Jonathan decided to unban
the nation from international football competitions.
This follows appeals by Nigerians and former Nigerian leaders to rconsider his decision.
The Nigerian Football Federation at the meeting with the president announced
the end of the two-year ban on the current Super Eagle team and apologised to the president
and Nigerians over the unimpressive performance of the team in the World Cup.
Board members have also set up an interim body to manage football in the
country, having sacked the top management of the federation.
The interim body is to develop football from sports academical.
Many Nigerians are happy that the president rescinded his earlier decision while
others are not.
There are indications that the Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, will probe the finances of the Nigerian Football Federation.
