Race to record dying languages in Sierra Leone

Issued on:

Africa has about 2,000 of the world's 6,000 languages. Hundreds are on the verge of extinction. In Sierra Leone, only a handful of people are thought to still speak Kim, and there are barely more speakers of Bom, two languages that field linguist Tucker Childs is trying to revive. In Sierra Leone, researchers are writing down, recording and trying to understand these dying languages.
