The gunbattle took place some 200 kilometres west of Algiers on Sunday evening. It lasted several hours and several other fighters were injured.

No official confirmation of the clashes has been obtained.

Some reports say three soldiers and one other person were lightly injured, not killed.

The Algerian troops surrounded the group and made an assault after residents alerted them to the presence of armed elements in the wooded Tiffellat region, east of the town of Ténès.

Several armed groups in the region claim allegiance to Al-Qaeda.
