West African leaders meet in Nigeria on Tuesday for a special summit intended to help resolve the election standoff in Côte d'Ivoire. This comes following the end of former South African president Thabo Mbeki’s mediation visit which failed to resolve the deadlock.

Leaders belonging to Ecowas, the Economic Community of West African States, have met to discuss the crisis on Tuesday.

“The president of the Ecowas commission will brief them on the situation in Côte d'Ivoire,” Sunny Ugoh, Ecowas spokesperson, told RFI.

“There will also be statements by [Burkina Faso’s] President Blaise Compaoré and by the special rep of the UN secretary general in Côte d'Ivoire. That will give them a global picture of the situation,” said Ugoh.

He added that at the end of the meeting a statement is expected detailing what they will do next to help resolve the crisis.

Ecowas previously said that Gbagbo should accept the decision of the electoral commission which declared Alassane Ouattara winner of the presidential election.

On Monday after being sent to the Côte d'Ivoire by the African Union, mediator Mbeki made no significant statement following meetings with rivals Laurent Gbagbo and Ouattara.

“You will not have peace without democracy, and neither democracy without peace,” said Mbeki.

“When it reflects on the report we will submit, its task [the AU] is to say, what is it that it can do very urgently, to assist and work with the people of Côte d'Ivoire,” he added.

At least 20 people have been killed in Côte d'Ivoire in election-related violence since the disputed poll, Amnesty International said on Monday.

On Tuesday, the United Nations began evacuating non-essential staff from Ivory Coast for fear of unrest in a political standoff after disputed elections.

Laurent Gbagbo should see himself as a disgrace to African.

Yes, Laurent Gbagbo should see himself as a disgrace to African.

After, final negotiation on 3rd Jan. with Gbagbo if he fails to step down for his rival President Alassane Ouattara declared winner of the presidential election. I strongly advise military intervention is highly recommended.

We do not need a leader like Laurent Gbagbo in Africa. We need democracy in Africa.

Thanks a lot to UN, EU, Ecowas, AU.

President Goodluck Jonathan thanks for your decision. Is only military intervention can remove Laurent Gbagbo. I wish you all the best President Goodluck. So that this will serve as a leason to others. ECOMOG only need 48 hours to remove Gbagbo, just like what they did in Liberia and Sierra leone. Now there`s peace Liberia and Sierra leone.

Yes!!! Nigeria has that military status to resolve this issue before it gets out of hand. A stitch in time saves nine.

most greedy personel ever

i believe the army chiefs in cote voire who protect Gbagbo are the most wicked persons on earth, who have no feelings for the people of ivory coast, by their intragence they have prove to be brute without human feelings who must not be allowed to rear animals let alone govern human beings as such the world must come together to wipe away such heartless gouges from the face of ivory coast into cages a fitting place for such heartless marons.

Mbeki and Mediation

Africans please lets be real. Mbeki has the worst record of mediation. Which country has he ever succeeded in? Even in SA they knew his intellectual deficiencies thats why they opted for Zuma.
Remember quiet diplomacy in Zimbabwe

The GbaGbo's Rule on Electoral Boards Is Un-called For!

He practically resigned all electoral commission members for announcing the results of the election in favor of his opponent.

What else is there to be talked about? having his own men called the result of an election held by who? His men or the Electoral Commission?

This is totally un acceptable.

GOD HELP US!

youre right. who would

youre right. who would control the world without love and prosperterity and also what in the world is he doing to these people. we are the same race. we were born together and die together.
