US is considering sanctions against Gbagbo and his inner circle

The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Johnnie Carson says Washington could slap sanctions on Laurent Gbagbo if he doesn't relinquish power in Cote d'Ivoire. Carson says a travel ban and economic sanctions could target him and his family if he doesn't recognize Alasanne Ouattara's victory in the presidential election.

"If president Gbagbo does not step down, the US is looking to take further additional steps against him, his family, his wife, his children, his immediate entourage and those individuals who are helping to keep him in power illegally," said Carson during a teleconference.

Gbagbo's ministers in his government may have to pull their children out of US colleges and boarding schools if sanctions are levied by the US.

Carson said that the sanctions would take the form of travel bans and economic sanctions will be considered.

"The era of stealing African elections is over," said Carson. "This should be an example for all of Africa that this can no longer be tolerated."
