Aristide says ready to follow Baby Doc back to Haiti

Former Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide, now living in exile in South Africa, has said he is "ready to serve" Haiti in the education sector, after the return of Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier this week. In a statement given to RFI, Aristide claims that "the people of Haiti have never stopped calling for my return" since he was driven into exile six years ago.
"We need to shake everything up so that the elections are annulled and new elections are held in which Duvalier can run," Henry Robert Sterlin, a former Haitian ambassador to France who said he was Duvalier's spokesperson, told AFP newswire on Wednesday.
Aristide was elected president in 1990 but overthrown during a coup d'etat in 1991. In 2004 he left for South Africa, claiming that he was forced out with US and French complicity.
He issued a statement from his home in South Africa Wednesday saying he was ready to serve his "Haitian sisters and brothers."
"So, to all those asking me to return home, I reiterate my willingness to leave today, tomorrow, at any time," according to Aristide's statement obtained by RFI. "The purpose is very clear: To contribute to serving my Haitian sisters and brothers as a simple citizen in the field of education," he said.
He added that doctors have warned him not to remain in a cold climate due to the deteriorating condition of his eyes.
"Let us hope that the Haitian and South African governments will enter into communication in order to make that happen in the next coming days," the statement said.
Duvalier, who is already in Haiti, was charged with corruption and embezzlement of state funds on Wednesday.

Aristide/arrest
If Aristide would return now, it is most likely that a public revolt will follow, quite possibly turning into a civil war. Has Haiti not had enough?
Does he not see that Duvalier is charged with so many crimes? Does he not see that, considering he was ousted, this is not a simple issue for him, either? If he truly loves his country, he should stay away from causing them more pain. Certainly at this point in history. So, Mr Aristide with the aching eyes, move to a better climate, like Nigeria, Morocco, Kenya for example. Nonsense reason!! All Duvalier and Aristide want is a piece of the pie while slapping their own chests. This is not for 'my people', nor is it a popularity contest!
