Sudan's Bashir will not stand for reelection
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir's party said Monday that he will not stand for reelection. An official from the National Congress Party insisted that Bashir made the decision as part of the party’s political strategy, and not under pressure from the anti-government protests sweeping through the Arab world.

NCP official Rabie Abdul Ati told the AFP news agency that Bashir wants to “give a chance to different personalities to compete for the position".
Bashir came to power in 1989, and won a new term in office in elections in April in the country’s first multi-party polls since 1986.
The opposition boycotted those elections, which were marked by accusations of fraud.
Bashir has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and genocide in the western Sudanese region of Darfur.
