Rajoelina, the president of Madagascar’s transitional government, said he decided to reappoint Vital after meeting with all the candidates.

Vital resigned Thursday as part of a roadmap proposed by a mediator and signed by eight political parties. Rajoelina was tasked with finding a consensus Prime Minister.

The groups all proposed their own candidates, with Vital presenting himself as his own successor.

The formation of a consensus government is key to solving the political crisis in the country, sparked when Rajoelina, backed by the army, staged a coup against former President Marc Ravalomanana in 2009.
