Clinton pledges US help in Tunisia rebuilding process

The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the United States will help Tunisia create jobs and undertake reforms as it continues to rebuild after the overthrow of its long-time ruler. The chief US diplomat is in Tunis for talks with interim President Foued Mebazaa, who has replaced Zine Al Abidine Ben Ali, the ousted leader who fled the country on 14 January.

"There's going to be a donors’ conference that will be held in some months. I'm going to be sending a delegation from the United States," said Clinton, who arrived in Tunis early on Thursday.

"So we want to know what Tunisia wants. We don't want to come in and say here's what the United States believes,” she said. “Then we want to work on plans... a plan for health, we want to help do what we can to have a plan for jobs.”

"The revolution created so many hopes and now we have to translate those hopes into results. That comes through economic reform and political reform.”

Clinton is also due to hold talks with Foreign Minister Mouldi Kefi and interim Prime Minister Beji Caid Essebsi. She will then meet some of the young people who took part in the protests that brought about Ben Ali’s downfall.

Unemployment was a major factor in the unrest that began in Tunisia in December, with the official rate now standing at 14 per cent.
