Paddle up - ancient form of surfing the nouvelle vague

Issued on:

Bernd Roediger, a 14-year-old Hawaiian, is taking the surfing world by storm in a discipline called stand up paddle surfing, or SUP. We met him at a surfing championship in Dakhla, off the western Sahara coast.

SUP was invented in Roediger's homeland, where it went by the name "hoe he'e nalu" in Hawaiian.

This emerging sport is an ancient form of surfing which recently resurfaced when surfing instructors used it with beginners.

Roediger has already challenged some of the world's best in the SUP tour.

In Dakhla, he took second place in the windsurf wave international competition. And he was already runner-up in the trials for that event which took place off of Big Island in Hawaii.
