Kadhafi's forces bombard Ajdabiya

Forces loyal to Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi bombarded rebels near Ajdabiya with heavy artillery on Sunday, forcing hundreds of residents to flee. According to witnesses in the north-east town, Kadhafi loyalists bombed the western gate of the city from about 20 kilometres away.

It was not known whether anyone was killed in the attack. A day earlier, at least eight were killed and 27 wounded when Kadhafi’s forces fired rockets at rebel positions, according to hospital officials.

Meanwhile in the western city of Misrata, a Greek ferry sent by the International Organisation for Migration was preparing to dock and deliver 500 tonnes of food and medicine. The boat will then collect more than 1,000 refugees, mainly West Africans, and take them to safety.

Rebels said they mounted successful raids on Kadhafi's troops in the city.

Despite the shortages of essential supplies, Shashank Joshi, a Libya specialist from the Royal United Services Institute, says the besieged rebels in Misrata are in a relatively strong position.

“It is very difficult for an offensive force to take a city when its residents are able to practice guerrilla warfare, take up defensive positions and fight back from the defences of buildings and other forms of obstacles,” he told RFI.
