One of the biggest emerging issues in Sub-Saharan Africa is the rise of substance abuse, particularly intravenous drug use. This issue, coupled with the high rate of HIV and AIDS in Africa, could have a disastrous effect. A clinic dealing with intravenous drug users was set up in Tanzania earlier this year. Leading epidemiologist Chris Beyer, from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, tells us about the programme, which he helped set up.
