Côte d'Ivoire's got talent

Five things we have learned about the final round of games in Group B.

  • Côte d’Ivoire coach François Zahoui has an abundance of talent at his disposal. He omitted Gervinho and Didier Drogba for the game against Angola . And still the Elephants trampled over the Palancas Negras 2-0.
  • Changing your goalie can be fatal. Angola keeper Carlos Alberto Fernandes may be all flowing burned-blond locks and photo opportunity saves but he’s unlikely to be involved in a mix-up with his defender that led to the second Ivorian goal. Wilson Alegre will have nightmares about his dash from the box and the defender’s header looping over him towards goal.
  • If you keep saying you’re getting closer for long enough, it will happen. The Sudan coach Mazda Abdallah has been pointing out since at least 2008 that Sudan is improving. Four points and qualification from a group comprising Côte D’Ivoire, Angola and Niger vindicates the Sudanese soothsayer.
  • Angola coach Lito Vidigal will have to regroup after failing to lead the side into the last eight for the first time since 2008. It is time for the 32 year olds Flavio and Love to step aside and let younger forwards taste top level experience.
  • For all the talk of underdogs having their day, Côte d’Ivoire have so far justified their billing as favourites. Three games and three victories. Five goals scored, none conceded. A very efficient group stage performance. Over to you Ghana.
