Somali villagers struggle to survive under Kenyan control

Residents of Bur Gabo and Ras Kamboni, two seaside Somali towns, used to rely on fishing and charcoal as their primary sources of income. This changed last October when the Kenyan military invaded Somalia and took control of the area from al-Shebab militants. The KDF enforced a UN resolution banning Somali charcoal exportation and obstructed fishing vessels citing security concerns. Residents say they appreciate the security the Kenyan forces provide but struggle to find alternative livelihoods.
