South Africans pack religious services in tribute to Mandela
In South Africa, countless religious services were held in towns and villages across the country to offer prayers for anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela, after his death on Thursday.The ruling African National Congress sent party officials to events all around South Africa and The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory held a special interfaith prayer service.Among the many people who paid tribute to the extraordinary leader was Ahmed Kathrada, one of Mandela’s fellow inmates on Robben island, who spoke at a memorial rally at Gandhi Hall in Johannesburg.RFI’s Daniel Finnan reports from Bryanston Methodist Church in Johannesburg, where the service was attended by South African President Jacob Zuma.
