Earlier sources told local media that all 103 had died but Colonel Farid Nechad of Algerian civil protection later said that one survivor had been found and that rescue workers were continuing the search for others.
The C-130 Hercules aircraft was flying in poor weather conditions to the city of Constantine , when it crashed in Oum El Bouaghi, 500 kilometres east of Algiers, an Algerian radio station said.
The plane was carrying 99 passengers - soldiers and their families - and four crew members.
