A French journalist has been killed in the Central African Republic (CAR), a statement from French President Francois Hollande said on Tuesday. The body of 26-year-old Camille Lepage was found by French soldiers during a vehicle check in western CAR. Lepage worked as a photojournalist and correspondent for RFI and other media houses.

“The president has learned with great sadness about the death of journalist Camille Lepage, who was reporting from the Central African Republic,” Hollande’s statement said.

“The body of Miss Lepage was found by a patrol of Sangaris troops while checking a vehicle driven by anti-Balaka militia in the region of Bouar,” the statement added, referring to militiamen from the mainly Christian vigilante group.

Lepage worked as a photojournalist for Paris-based studio Han Lucas.

She also freelanced for RFI and had spent time in South Sudan, which she used as a base while she worked in the CAR.

The French president offered his condolences to Lepage’s family and ordered the immediate dispatch of a team to investigate her killing.

He said that “all necessary measures” would be taken to “shed light on the murder and to find the murderers”.

On 6 May on her Twitter account Lepage described travelling with the anti-balaka militia to Amada Gaza, in the west of the country, close to the border with Cameroon.

Her last photo published on Instagram has already drawn several messages of sympathy.

“Thank you for all you did in your too short life," one user wrote. "May you and your family find peace.”
