Algeria identifies some of French hiker’s Islamist murderers

Algerian authorities say they have identified some of the kidnappers of French tourist Hervé Gourdel and have vowed to track them down and identify the rest. Gourdel was decapitated by a group calling itself Jund al-Khilafa (Soldiers of the Caliphate) last week.

“The first results of the investigation have allowed us to identify some of the members of the terrorist group” involved in the kidnapping and murder, Justice Minsiter Tayeb Louh announced on television on Tuesday.

A magistrate specialising in terrorism and organised crime was put in charge of the investigation on Sunday.

Arrest warrants have been issued for the men alleged to have been identified and hope to identify the place from which the video of Gourdel’s killing was uploaded to the internet.

On Tuesday Jund al-Khilafa posted a new video in which its leader, Abou Othman el-Assimi, confirms its allegiance to the Islamic State armed group, which is fighting in Syria and Iraq
