France will donate six billion euros to electricity provision on the African continent between 2016 and 2020, Hollande said, and two billion euros will be devoted to renewable energy.

"France wishes to set an example," the French president went on, pointing out that Africa suffers the consequences of global warming although it is not responsible for greenhouse gas emission".

African leaders welcomed the announcement but called on all rich countries to contribute to realising their countries energy needs.

They have submitted a plan for a 7,600-kilometre-long "green wall" of trees and farms to stop desertification, one of the causes of climate change.
