Mexico's Calderon orders manhunt to find missing politician
Mexican Prsident Felipe Calderon ordered a manhunt across Mexico this weekend to find former presidential candidate Diego Fernandez de Cevallos, who disappeared last Friday, possibly the victim of the country's massive drug war.
Fernandez de Cevallos's car was found at his residence near Queretaro, a town north of Mexico City "bearing signs of violence" according to the prosecutor's office. There were no other signs that a kidnapping had been carried out, however.
A former presidential candidate in Mexico's 1994 presidential race, Fernandez de Cevallos, 69, a member of the ruling conservative National Action Party (PAN), has served in Congress as a representative and a senator.
Both Mexico City's current mayor, Marcelo Ebrard, and former Mexican President Vicente Fox expressed concern. Ebrard offered assistance to authorities.
"We still don't know exactly what happened, but I greatly care for him and hope that he is all right," Fox told Reforma newpaper.
More than 22,700 people have died in Mexico's violent drug wars since 2006.
