The United States has closed its consulate in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez to carry out a security review amid spiralling drug gang-related violence, officials said Friday.

The indefinite shutdown of the facility comes after the fatal shootings in March of three people linked to the US consulate in Ciudad Juarez.

"The US consulate general in Ciudad Juarez has closed to review its security posture," said a statement released by the US embassy in Mexico City.

It added that the consulate would remain closed until a security review had been completed and advised American citizens to avoid the area.

Meanwhile the Mexican Defence Ministry has announced that it has killed a top leader of Mexico's Sinaloa drug gang.

Deputy Defence Minister Edgar Ruiz said Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel had been shot dead in the western city of Guadalajara after opening fire on troops. He added that two soldiers were also killed in the gun battle.
