TechnoratiTwo francophone films nominated for Oscars
Two French-speaking films, Hors-la-loi and Incendies, are in the running for this year’s Oscars for the best foreign film. The nominations for the 83rd annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday.
Hors-la-loi is an Algerian film with a French director, Rachid Bouchareb. It follows three brothers who survived the 1945 Sétif massacre, when French forces killed between 1,500 and 45,000 pro-independence demonstrators.
The film caused controversy in France because some believed it misrepresented the episode as a massacre rather than a battle and that it was disrespectful to the memory of French soldiers.

There were demonstrations at the Cannes film festival when it was screened there in May, and a pensioner was given a one-month suspended prison sentence and fined 3,000 euros for making bomb threats against cinemas that were showing it last September.
Incendies, by Québécois director Denis Villeneuve, follows two brothers from Canada to the Middle East, where they search for their father, who they had thought was dead.
It was named best Canadian film by the Toronto Film Critics Association.
Hors-la-loi and Incendies will be up against Mexican film Biutiful, Greek film Canine and Danish film Revenge.
The Oscars ceremony will be held on 27 February
