Twenty people were killed in Ciudad Juarez on Friday and 19 on Saturday, according to officials who reported at least one death on Sunday.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the city last year, according to government statistics. Tens of thousands of people have fled and 70 per cent of shops have closed.

Authorities believe that the Acapulco killings were also drug-related.

President Felipe Calderon on Saturday announced that four new battalions will be assigned to fighting drug traffickers close to the US border.

A US government travel advisory urged a “heightened sense of alert” for Americans living or travelling in central Mexico after drug cartel gunmen shot dead a US agent, wounding another.

They were ambushed in San Luis Potosi state on Tuesday.

US officials believes that the Zetas drug gang, which has become stronger in the region and throughout the country, may have been responsible for the attack.
