Manuel Valls, who is a close friend of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, suggested that the story was so often in the headlines because certain people benefited from the problems of Strauss-Kahn and the story sold newspapers.

Another Socialist presidential frontrunner, François Hollande, who is currently ahead in the polls, could be embarrassed by the Tristane Banon case.

At the time of the alleged incident, he was leader of the Socialist Party.

Tristane Banon maintains that she made François Hollande aware of her accusations against Dominique Strauss-Kahn at the time of the alleged incident, but that Hollande took no action.

François Hollande insists he has no "detailed knowledge" of the matter.

Meanwhile Socialist Member of Parliament Jean-Marie Le Geun suggested that the Banon case was motivated by political opportunism."Tristane Banon has been telling this tale for years. Now she brings a complaint," he said "Clearly, certain people are not happy about the return of Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
