Bradley Manning WikiLeaks trial starts

Issued on:

Three years after his arrest in Iraq for allegedly causing the United States' worst ever national security breach, US Army private Bradley Manning is to go on trial today over his disclosures to WikiLeaks. If found guilty on all charges, he faces a jail sentence of more than 100 years. One charge Manning denies, is that he assisted enemies of the US, which is punishable by death. Opinion is divided over whether Manning is a man of exceptional conscience, and computer skills, or a traitor. Michael Ratner is a prominent defender of constitutional rights in the US, and the defence lawyer for Wikileaks boss Julian Assange. He has expressed concern about the handling of the Manning case by the U.S. government and the military. RFI asked him to explain why.
