WHO challenges Philippine bishops' advice on condoms

By RFI

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has defied the Philippines' Catholic Church, criticising its bishops' opposition to the use of condoms as a means of prevention for HIV-Aids.

Although the WHO’s statement released on Monday did not mention the church by name, it contradicted bishops' recent claims that condoms are too porous and do not work in preventing the spread of infection.

The Catholic Church claims over 80 per cent of Filipinos as its followers. It has been leading an anti-condom campaign and openly attacking the government after health officials distributed free condoms to mark Valentine’s Day.

The WHO statement also warned that HIV-Aids is a growing concern in the Philippines, with newly reported cases increasing from one every three days in 2000 to two infections per day in 2009.

Sexual intercourse was reported to be the main mode of HIV transmission.
