Kashmir separatists strike over teenager death

Opponents of Indian rule and police clashed during a strike over the death of a 17-year-old-boy in Kashmir as the Muslim-majority state was at a standstill. Some witnesses said Tufail Ahmed Mattoo was hit by a teargas shell fired by the police and died before he could be taken to hospital.

Mattoo's family said he was not part of the protest and was carrying his school bag when he was hit. Since his death, about 70 police and protesters have been injured in violent clashes across the Indian-administered Kashmiri town of Srinagar.

The state is in the grip of a 20-year insurgency against rule from New Delhi. The unrest has left more than 47,000 people dead by the official count.

On Saturday, over 60 police and protesters were hurt during day-long clashes across the city, despite security restrictions imposed by the authorities to block demonstrations.

"The restrictions will continue and no one will be allowed to hold protest demonstrations," said Meraj Kakroo, Srinagar's deputy commissioner.

Tension have been running high for months after local police accused the military of killing three civilians in April.
