TechnoratiIndonesian Islamist jailed for anti-Christian violence
An Indonesian court has sentenced Islamist Eko Budi Wardoyo, alias Munsif, to ten years in prison for anti-Christian violence in the province of Central Sulawesi. Judge Supeno said he had “inspired fear and terror” in the area, which was hit be sectarian violence in the early 2000s.
Wardoyo surveyed a market for bombers who killed 22 people in the mainly-Christian town of Tentana in 2005 and appointed the assassins of female Minister Susiyanti Tinulele, who was shot dead as she delivered a sermon in a church in Palu in 2004.
Three members of Tinulele’s congregation were also killed.
“I won’t appeal against the decision. It’s too complicated,” Wardoyo said after the trial.
About 1,000 people were killed in violence between Muslims and Christians in Sulawesi’s Posos district in 2000 and 2001.
Sporadic unrest continued for several years and in 2005 an Islamist group beheaded three teenage Christian girls.
