Eight people were killed when a suicide bombing ripped through a supermarket in central Kabul, police say. Three foreign women and a child were among the victims.

The attack occurred on Friday afternoon at the Finest supermarket which is popular with Westerners.

"A total of eight people, including three foreign women, have been killed and six others injured, including three supermarket employees," Kabul police said in a statement.

The explosion set off a fire in the supermarket, but it was quickly extinguished.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack saying they were targeting employees of the security firm Xe, previously known as Blackwater.

"Some employees and the head of Blackwater were shopping in the supermarket in Kabul when one of our men attacked them," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP.

"We claim credit for this attack."

However a Xe spokesperson says that none of its employees were wounded in the attack.
