Turkish media report that the death toll could rise as several other troops were seriously wounded, and they quote Turkey's defence minister Ismet Yilmaz saying "We'll retaliate in kind".
The attack took place in the Cukurca region of Hakkari province, close to the border with Iraq, according to Yimaz.
