Bangladesh death-trap garment factories

Issued on:

Almost 130 people have been killed in fires at Bangladeshi garment factories in the past three months alone. Around 700 workers have been burnt to death since 2005. The industry generates 15 billion euros annually for Bangladesh - 10 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product. Most of the clothes are produced for retailers in developed countries where consumers are often unaware of the safety issues in Bangladesh. And it is not just fires that workers fear.
