Bagram military prison handed over to Afghan authorities

Issued on:

In Afghanistan, Bagram military prison will be handed over to Afghan authorities today, according to United States defence ministry officials. The handover had been slated for earlier this month but was postponed following comments about the fate of the prisoners by Afghan president Hamid Karzai. A major sticking point between the Americans, who have controlled the facility since 2001 and the Afghans, has been what to do with prisoners deemed dangerous to the coalition forces. There is also no clear plan on how to deal with several hundred non-Afghan insurgents being held at Bagram. Rachel Reid, director of Pakistan Open Society Foundations discusses the delay of the handover.
