Northern Indian Monsoon weakens a fragile environment

The torrential early monsoon rain in northern India and in the Himalayan mountain regions of Nepal has left at least a thousand people dead. The authorities say the figure is likely to rise. RFI spoke to Dr Ravi Chopra, a development and geography specialist from the region, about some of the causes of the damage created by this unusually harsh seasonal weather in Uttarakhand State.
