Protests in Bulgarian capital nearing 100 mark

Issued on:

For the last three months, the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, has seen hundreds and thousands of people take to the streets nightly, to vent their anger against the Socialist-led coalition government of Prime Minister Plamen Orisharski. The previous government was ousted in February and the public’s anger was reignited in June after Oresharski’s cabinet appointed Deylan Peevski, a controversial media baron, to be the head of the national security agency. Peevski quickly resigned but it was not enough to stop fresh demonstrations over Bulgaria’s opaque political system, now nearly on their 100th day.
