Sri Lanka’s first Tamil chief minister sworn in

Issued on:

Sri Lanka’s first Tamil chief minister is sworn in today. C. V. Wigneswaran will take his oaths with President Mahinda Rajapakse. Tamil supporters have called for a boycott of the ceremony amid claims Rajapakse intimidated candidates and voters to help the chances of his own Sinhalese party. RFI speaks to Teresita Schaffer, a former US ambassador to Sri Lanka, who explains how his victory is important amid lingering bitterness from the Sinhalese and Tamil conflict.
