India's upper house of parliament is set to pass a controversial anti-corruption bill that was approved by the lower house almost two years ago. The bill provides for the creation of a corruption watch-dog, a Lokpal, that would among other things investigate claims against ministers, including the prime minister. Both the ruling majority party, the Congress and the main opposition party, the BJP have backed the bill which has also drawn much criticism. Nikita Sud, an expert in Indian politics, society and development at Oxford University, comments some of the important features and implications of the Lokpal.
