India general election 2014

Graphic: India's general election in numbers

Millions of Indians are voting in a general election that promises major changes in the country's politics. The secular Congress, headed by Rahul Gandhi, is struggling to hold on to power, challenged by the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by the controversial Narendra Modi, and with the one-year-old anti-corruption Aam Adami (Common Man) Party as a wild card. To form a government the winner will almost certainly have to hack deals with smaller national and regional parties. And, in a vast country with 814 million on the electoral register, everything is on a grand scale, as our graphic shows.
