Twelve great French paintings loaned to Hong Kong, Macau for Le French May

Twelve masterpieces from French museums are to travel to the Chinese territory of Macau as part of the Le French May season, celebrated annually on the island and in Hong Kong. They include works by Pablo Picasso, Auguste Renoir and Jean-Honoré Fragonard.

The works, leant by Paris's Pompidou Centre, Musée d'Orsay and Louvre along with the Versailles palace, will be on show at Macau's art museum from 27 June to 7 September 2014.

Three of them - Renoir's Le Balancoire (The Swing), Fragonard's Le Verrou (The Lock) and a portrait of François 1 by Jean Clouet - are part of a loan to China to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between France and China.

Picasso's Painter and Model in the Studio is also part of the loan.

Le French May, now is in its 22nd year, is Hong Kong's biggest foreign cultural event.

It starts on 2 May and involves 30 exhibitions, 56 theatrical shows and screenings of French films.

The Hong Kong Museum of Art will stage an exhibition of works by Chinese painters who lived in France between the two world wars from 20 June to 21 September.

Works by French artist Fabienne Verdier, who lived and worked in the Chinese province of Sichuan in the 1980s, will be on show at Hong Kong City Hall from 13 May to 8 June.
